The Pulaski Fire Department responded to 205 West Madison Street Tuesday afternoon around 2:00.

Pulaski Fire Chief Don Collins said that a worker remodeling the second floor of the building flipped a cigarette down in the wall near a window, and smoke could be seen outside the building. A smoke detector alarm sounded and the fire department was called.

There was approximately $8,000 damage due to the wall being torn out to make sure the fire was extinguished.

Chief Collins said it could have been more serious if the fire had not been detected during the day.  He reminded everyone to make sure the batteries in your smoke detectors are working properly.
