In an update to an earlier story…


September 9th deputies responded to 14635 Columbia Highway in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival deputies were advised a male had a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Melvin Hyde, 56. of Giles County. EMS arrived on the scene and provided aide and transported the victim to Southern Tennessee Regional Hospital. Mr. Hyde was pronounced dead at Southern Tennessee Regional Hospital.


Investigators with the Giles County Sheriff’s Department along with Sheriff Kyle Helton, Chief Brandon Beard and Captain Joseph Purvis responded to the scene. A person of interest was identified and located and willingly came to the Giles County Sheriff’s Department. Jonathan Darrell Dimarco, 36 was arrested for Violation of Sex Offender Registry. Mr. Dimarco will appear in General Sessions Court on September 20th.


During the course of the lengthy investigation it led to the Indictment of Jonathan Darrell Dimarco for first degree murder, aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of weapon. Mr. Dimarco is being held in Giles County Jail on $200,000 bond and will appear in Circuit Court on September 24, 2018.


Sheriff Kyle Helton commended the numerous hours that the staff invested in bringing closure to the case. Sheriff Helton also commended the working relationship with community first responding agencies. Sheriff Helton praised Giles County EMS, Giles County Emergency Management, TWRA, Giles County Rescue Squad, District Attorney’s Office and Lawrence County Swift Water Rescue Team.
