Hunting season is here, and for many people struggling with hunger, donating a deer can help provide much-needed relief.

Now in its 20th year, the Hunters for the Hungry program has provided more than 5.9 million meals to those in need. The average donated deer will provide about 168 servings.

The Hunters for the Hungry program continues through the hunting season.

Participating locally in the program is AJ's Deer Processing on Minor Hill Highway. Owner Dennis Kimbrough said all deer donated to the Hunters for the Hungry through his processing facility go to the Giles County Help Center and to Matthew 25 Thrift Shoppe.

Kimbrough said if a hunter brings in a field dressed deer, an application will be filled out and Kimbrough will do the rest. If the deer is not field dressed, a hunter will pay $20 dollars to donate the deer and if the hunter wants the head skinned to mount, it will cost another $20 .

The deer meat given to the Help Center and Matthew 25 is offered when a food box is requested.
