Another Giles County resident has fallen victim to a scam telephone call and has reported it to Sheriff Kyle Helton.

The Sheriff said the scammer called the local resident to say there is a computer security issue, and this person needed to purchase a firewall immediately. Helton said the resident sent between $4,000 and $5,000 to these scammers in response to this type of notification.

The Sheriff's Department will not be able to get this money or even proceed very far with an investigation because the scammers are in a foreign country, and the money is sent to that country.

As always, the Sheriff and his department warns against giving out any personal information or sending money to someone calling to solicit goods or services. Be very suspicious of a caller who asks for personal information, makes computer related inquires or talks about anything else that involves money.

It may be a scam if the caller wants you to send them money, phone cards, prepaid credit cards or money grams. These types of transactions are almost always scams, and you will lose your money, Helton said.
