As a part of an ongoing plan to promote student health at Martin Methodist College and to make the college more sustainable, water refill stations have been placed around the campus. Since the first one was installed in April last year, Martin Methodist has kept 22,611 plastic bottles out of landfills.

The idea was one of sophomore and Biology Club president Hunter Martin, who noticed poor water quality and understood how wasteful it is to throw away plastic bottles.

Martin said it’s a small step, but to back his initiative, he used a quote from Margaret Mead that says in part: ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.’”

Martin Methodist Biology Professor Dr. Shanna Hanes said the department is impressed with the level of initiative shown by the students who are showing they care about sustainability in reducing plastic water usage and about student health.
