August brought an unusual amount of storms to the Giles County area and the Giles County Farm Service Agency encourages farmers who have had any livestock losses due to the storms to call  the agency at 363-2675 or go by 1024 Mill Street. These deaths may be eligible for payments through the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP).

The LIP compensates livestock owners and contract growers for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to an eligible adverse weather event, or avian predator attacks such as black headed buzzards.

A notice of loss must be filed with Farm Service Agency within 30 days of when the loss of livestock occurred or became apparent. Producers are encouraged to bring supporting evidence, including documentation of the number and kind of livestock that died, supplemented if possible by photographs to document the loss. It is imperative to report any type of loss to establish a normal mortality.
