The Better Business Bureau is warning about a new scam that targets business owners.
A Nashville contractor recently turned down a job that turned out to be a scam, according to WSMV.com.
The BBB is seeing a trend of local business owners receiving checks for more money than they asked for. Many of them are cashing them. The checks are coming back as counterfeit or a fraudulent check.
Contractors are especially susceptible. There are a lot of them and many are used to dealing with out-of-state property management companies.
The scam artists often use the names of legitimate businesses to appear more convincing.
An unusually high dollar amount on a check is the biggest red flag, but another is the scam artists prefer to communicate by email and will be difficult to reach on the phone.
